1. The first and most important thing in comparing two products is to compare the guaranteed concentrations of each product to determine which product provides your pet with the highest level of joint therapy possible. Be sure to look at the dosages as well.
Lets do an arbitrary dose comparison of two fabricated products. Product 1 contains 500 mg of Glucosamine per dose, and the dosage size is ½ oz. Product 2 contains 1500 mg of Glucosamine per dose with a dosage size of ¼ oz. For the easiest comparison, convert each product concentration to mg per 1 ounce. Product 1 contains 500 x 2 = 1,000 mg Glucosamine per oz, whereas Product 2 contains 1250 x 4 = 5,000 mg Glucosamine per oz, thus is 5 times more potent then Product 1.
2. Next you need to compare the cost of doses to each other. There is a possibility that the 500 mg glucosamine supplement (product 1) is 5 times cheaper (this is how much cheaper it would need to be to equal the same cost – benefit ratio), and thus would make the two products close to the same value.
Numbers 3-5 is about important supporting joint ingredients; this section will help you determine what additional ingredients are necessities to an effect pet supplement.
3. Anti-inflammatory agents are an integral part of the joint therapy system. Many people leave out these very vital ingredients in their formulation. Make sure that your joint supplement contains them. MSM is an anti-inflammatory agent that is extremely safe and effective; it helps relieve the pain associated with arthritis. Another highly effective anti-inflammatory agent is Bromelain, but is often found in lesser concentrations than MSM.
4. Shark Cartilage is another ingredient that is seen a lot on the market but most people don’t compare it to Chondroitin Sulfate. Shark Cartilage has been added into joint supplements as a replacement for chondroitin because shark cartilage contains approximately 20% chondroitin sulfate in it. Therefore, in comparison, the supplement at hand would need 5 times the shark cartilage to equal the same amount of chondroitin sulfate in the product. (However, there are other beneficial compounds in shark cartilage besides the chondroitin sulfate).
5. Antioxidants are significant for the health of your pets’ joints along with their overall wellbeing. The most important antioxidant that a joint supplement could contain is Vitamin C. Vitamin C is vital in the construction and repairing of cartilage throughout the body. Other than that, you just need to look at concentration levels per dose and determine who has a high level in their product. (Other antioxidants include Vitamin E and Grape Seed Extract).
6. The purity of each ingredient is important in your product decision. Many companies will put a lower quality ingredient into their product to save money, but this will cut down on the benefits associated with the ingredient. Make sure that the purity level of Glucosamine HCl is at least 99% pure and the purity of Glucosamine Sulfate is at least 97% pure.
7. Subsequently, you must take into account whether or not your dog eat the supplement. Dogs are carnivorous animals (they only eat meat), thus should be feed a supplement that tastes like meat. Many supplements flavor their product as citrus, apple, or grape (doesn’t seem like it was intended for dogs at all). That is not what a dog instinctively wants to eat.
8. Both liquid and pill form are adequate ways to introduce glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, and other joint relief ingredients into the body. However, there are a couple disadvantages to a liquid. The main disadvantage is that in the production of a pill or tablet, the manufacturer must add binders (ingredients to make the glucosamine, etc. stick together) to make a solid pill that will not break apart. Unfortunately, by doing this, it will bind some of the glucosamine and other ingredients and your dog will be unable to absorb the entire amount. In a liquid supplement, all the compounds are free and ready for absorption.
9. Finally, buy a product that has a guarantee on it. If the company won’t stand behind their product, it will probably let you down. Products that contain guarantees elevate themselves to a higher standard and are more often client-based companies that will work with you and satisfy your needs.
